A necessary law for the recognition of trans people rights

 In News

SURT Foundation applauds the approval of the law for the real and effective equality of trans* people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people, officially published today and which becomes a reality after long debates in political and social fields.

Surt defends that it is a necessary law to be able to provide basic rights to transgender people. “Far from being a constructed fiction, trans* people see how society denies them access to the essentials and hate speeches have dire consequences on their lives,” the organization states.

According to ILGA, around the world in 2022, 327 trans and gender diverse people died as a result of transphobic violence. “Avoiding stigmatization and providing rights is to build a fair and equitable society, respectful of people. Dehumanizing and criminalizing trans* people only produces suffering and inequality, in addition to leaving them in a situation of extreme insecurity.” they argue from Surt.

The organization celebrates the approval of trans law as a step forward in the fight for equity and recognition to end stigma, discrimination, marginalization, oppression and the violation of rights.

Empowerment against discrimination

Trans women are a very vulnerable group. “We must remember the murder of Sonia Rescalvo in 1992 in Ciutadellas Park, the transphobic attacks, the hate speeches aimed at trans people, the lack of access to the labor market or social marginalization in the one who submits to them,” exemplifies Sira Vilardell, general director of Surt Foundation.

“Working for the empowerment of trans women is one of our commitments in order to promote inclusion and their well-being and safety, to promote professional development, to generate awareness and respect their reality”, adds Vilardell.

Surt is committed to empowerment as a way of fighting discrimination and raising awareness of women’s rights and also as a tool for social transformation. In relation to trans women, Trans Sorority Place of Surt promotes their rights through mutual support. At the same time, the organization has developed methodologies for socio-labor orientation and non-discriminatory or stigmatizing care.
